For anyone wanted to know the reasons why my profile is part of the R-O report.

It is simply called “VOS” Victim of Success or “TPS” Tall Poppy Syndrome.

Background information
I am a successful entrepreneur and extremely knowledgeable in the domain of branding, marketing, technology and digital space.

I have helped and participated to the growth of some major multinationals across the world for decades. My clients are companies like, Columbia Tri-star Films, Le Meridien Hotel Group, Meritus Hotel Group. Virgin Money, Oroton, Ferrari, Maserati, and the list goes on. All my life I have strived to deliver the most efficient services and in many cases completely e-transformed companies that I was involved with.

8 months after the 2001 tech crash an entire team of one of the top five legal firms and top five accounting firm spent one full month in my offices interviewing all of my 100 employees + and that after their due diligence I was still able to sell my business for $25M to a Dutch group, while everyone else in the space was worth nothing, that should tell you that I am not a fake.

I am entirely focused on building value services and helping my clients and anyone that I am involved with growing their business and they will all give you a testimonial of my ongoing personal support and commitment.

The New Business Venture
After the expiration of my 3 years of trade restriction (2005) - this happens when you sell a business for a large amount of money, they simply don’t want you to start a month after. I created another very successful company that would revolutionise the way people are doing business in the digital space. So successful that after only one year of sales and development (December 2006) several parties wanted to invest in order to get a slice of the pie (my previous partners got a return of 400% in just 12 months, in probably one of the toughest possible time). Business was going well and growing substantially.

The Investors / New partners
Due diligence started and a team of investors join my company to make my business a publicly listed company. As astute investors, Chairman and CEO of existing listed companies they made a public statement that said “We have to say that we have never invested in such a good business”…and I have people who can testify on that.

The Partnership Problems
A few months later, partnership problems started (I will spare you the details, it wasn’t pretty…) so I had no choice but to resign as we did not share the same vision and business ethics. This time I did not sell, nor did I make any money from it, in fact I lost a substantial amount. I just made the wrong decision and got involved with the wrong people. Call it corporate hijack… What can you do? I admit it, I made a huge mistake and paid for it and I can honestly say I have certainly learnt from it.

Investors Full Management Takeover
Unfortunately after my resignation (July 2007), the management caused some issues with some of the people who joined under my leadership. These people thought that it was not what they signed for and decided to create defamatory remarks and statements to damage the names of everyone involved with the company and of course I was one of them. There was nothing I could do about the situation, as an officer of the company I was only partially in control, hence why I had no choice but to resign.

The Defamatory Report
Being successful and with a profile was an easy target for any of these disgruntled people that were having issues with the way the business was now heading without my leadership. There are always going to be people who will be unhappy in business but to go out of their way to destroy other people’s lives and business by posting unfound remarks on a well known extortion site is really pushing the envelope.

I don’t know how people can live with themselves doing this to hard working, respectable people, just to damage their reputation and to stop them from doing any business. Remember karma…and what goes around comes around.

When someone mentions the report to me…it makes me feel ill. I have built my reputation over 20 years and have worked very hard for it and I have to continually defend and explain myself for a situation that I was not involved with but I will always take the time to explain the above.

Let me tell you…All it takes is 10 minutes to completely anonymously post a story for it to happen to you. So…what would you do, if you knew it was a false and defamatory story but could not remove it because the site is one of the biggest cons in Internet history in which the owner of the site is being prosecuted for extortion and has many lawsuits against him but has gone into hiding? The worse thing I can do based on

One day your clients or maybe a dissatisfied employee, ex-friend or even family member may do the same to you. If you recognise yourself and were unhappy with any of the directors after I had left, the best thing that you could have done was to come directly to me personally and discuss any issues and a plan to moving forward again instead of listening to unfound rumours.

THE REPORT

Accusations that Rip-Off Report just an Extortion Business

One of the most interesting stories to catch my eyes in the last few months was this exposé from Chris Bennet at 97th Floor - Google, Your Honeymoon with Rip Off Report Has to Stop. Looking through Chris’ detailed research into the practices of the website and perusing some of the appalling accusations made about the business and its founder, it’s shocking that the domain continues to retain its authority.

Here’s the basic gist of Chris’ arguments:

  1. The website - Rip Off Report - essentially earns a living through extortion of businesses based on the search results (almost like a reverse reputation management campaign).
  2. Because the site ranks well at Google (Yahoo!, Live, and Ask appear not to give it as much weight), companies whose profiles appear on the site must pay the owner to have the information removed or have administrative comments added that an issue was resolved or the complaint was found to be false.
  3. It would appear that content creators unfamiliar with the English language, yet very familiar with keyword stuffing, create many of the negative profiles on the site (ostensibly to help them rank better in the search engines so they will have a greater negative impact on the businesses they list).
  4. The site even features bizarre allegations (supposedly from a 16 year old girl) that Google’s founders propositioned her and another underage girl.

Certainly, if you visit the site (which I won’t link to directly), you’ll note the exaggerated style and tone of the content suggests a less-than-professional organization. The site proudly claims not to investigate the comments left by its visitors, and one is forced to wonder if Rip Off Report will truly investigate once a business pays them (or whether they simply remove the listing or add their “all’s well” commentary).

Beyond the ethics, I have to say that it’s a fascinating business model from an SEO perspective - integrating the negative linkbait pull of trashing a business or person as a link acquisition technique, using the link weight to rank well for company names, then forcing them to pay in order to “mitigate” their bad publicity through search engines.

Honestly, I’m surprised that someone like Matt Cutts hasn’t taken action against the site - it would seem to fit well within his usual definition of manipulating Google.

I think more investigation of the site might be warranted - just a few quick searches led me down a fascinating tale of dodged court appearances, paranoia, default judgments, and violent threats. Here’s a few gems:

  • The Phoenix Sun Times - The Real Rip Off Report - the reporter’s meeting with ROR’s owner is almost hard to believe, and the number of businesses paying thousands each month (if accurate) make this one of the most profitable black/gray hat SEO concepts I’ve ever heard.
  • Eric Goldman - Rip Off Report Gets Mixed Ruling - it would appear that the site does have the ability to operate legally, though Chris’ blog post certainly suggests that the owners themselves are behind much of the content (and thus would have to answer for it). That portion of the case (suggesting that the owners created the libelous content) is still proceeding in Arizona.
  • A video from Florida - WSVN on Rip-Off Report - showing fairly compelling evidence that the site does indeed extort businesses by offering to turn bad reports into positive ones for a fee.

BTW - I’m not sure why Chris didn’t mention it, but as far as Google’s TOS violations go, it would appear that they’re also selling paid link advertising and passing link juice (the banners in the top right corners don’t have no follows).
